Background:
The traditional village school was founded in 1730 under the will of the Rev Gilbert White, and now occupies a building which opened in 1844. It is situated in a 'lovely, peaceful setting' in a beautiful village surrounded by 'outstanding natural countryside'. Facilities include a large enough indoor area for dance and gymnastics and a large field adjoining the school. Selborne aims to present a 'challenging and wide' curriculum and has the advantage of small classes. Computers are used to support all areas of the curriculum. 'Considerable emphasis' is placed on art. There are after-school clubs in football, netball and rounders and teams have won rounders comptitions for the last two years. Music lessons are offered in keyboard/piano and violin. Visits to places such as the New Forest and Slimbridge Wildfowl Trust are part of the educational experience, while the school's historical connection with Gilbert White inspires visits to the museum. Pupils work hard to raise considerable funds for charities such as NSPCC, RSPCA, Shelter and Oxfam. The involvement of parents in school life is welcomed. 'The school aims to serve the local community by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian belief and practice'.
