Background:
Built in 1929 in 'one of the best settings in Hampshire', bordered on two sides by the River Tesr, the school is housed in an 'attractive' building with a steep pitched roof, dormer windows and four classrooms. In front, a large lawn is dotted with fruit trees and to the rear is a 'modest' tarmac playground and field. Across the playground is a small hall in a wooden building with an attached kitchen, as well as a 'rather delapitated' temporary classroom. Due to 'good' community links, pupils have access to adjacent village tennis courts and playing field. Other 'strong' links include the Traditional Arts Project which has involved reviving the traditional 'tree dressing' ceremony, in which the whole community, the mayor and local MP have become involved. As part of the same project a connection has been established with a school in Chile. Local coaches from the community help with singing, football and netball, while the school's 'excellent' reputation for music is a result of composing songs and other activities involving all children. Wherwell prides itself on its reputation for special educational needs and in providing the students with a 'good education in a happy environment'. The school is currently oversubscribed and receives three applications for every place.
