Background:
The school was opened in 1954 in King's Worthy, an expanded village on the edge of Winchester. The original building, which houses six classrooms, a library and a large hall, was almost immediately too small so the LEA took over a neighbouring Victorian house and converted it for school use. This now houses five classrooms, two small additional teaching spaces and a music room. The school grounds are 'very spacious' since they now include the gardens of the original house. There is also a 'large' playing field. The school believes in 'all-round' education for its pupils and continues to provide 'as many opportunities as possible for sport and creative arts'. Pupils play the 'normal primary school team games' and enjoy 'mid-table respectability' finishing as runners up in the 1998 tournaments. Both netball and football teams also won the Fair Play Trophy. The lacrosse team qualified for the regional tournament. The school runs a performing arts club and put on the 'Wizard of Oz' in the summer of 1999. Key Stage 2 pupils have the opportunity to join the singing club and then graduate to an auditioned chamber choir and another smaller group, Post Schola. They sang at the Wessex Music Conference last year and were invited to sing at the Hampshire Music services 'Winter Prom' at the Anvil in Basingstoke. All pupils in Year 3 are offered the opportunity to play the recorder, and the main group uses the 'full range of instruments'. Pupils can also learn other instruments and then play in the band. The school has 'established a pattern of charity fund riasing'. Sometimes this is a whole school effort and often the pupils plan and run small projects of their own for the charity of their choice. The school has 'strong links with the local community' through the church and the Parish Council.
