Background:

Opened in 1969, Hounsdown occupies an attractive 20-acre site on the western side of Totton. Its extensive catchment area covers West Totton and much of the New Forest including Ashurst, Lyndhurst and surrounding villages. A major building programme in the 1990s resulted in new art rooms, music rooms with practice rooms and a science block with ten laboratories. There are also four networked information technology rooms, a modern languages suite and updated accommodation for technology. Other facilities include an assembly hall, gymnasium, indoor swimming pool, fitness room, specialist teaching rooms and library and resource centre. Good-sized playing fields and hard tennis courts are adjacent to the school, which also benefits from its proximity to the New Forest, the coast and the Calshot Activities Centre. In addition to the National Curriculum, some pupils study German from Year 8 and in their final two years can choose from options including art, business studies, child development, dance, drama, food technology, graphic products, music, physical education GCSE, religious studies, resistant materials and textiles. A wide range of extra curricular opportunities includes sport, music and drama. Major expeditions are arranged each year including foreign exchange, ski trips, outward-bound and fieldwork courses.
