Background:
The school was created in 1973 out of former Winchester County High School for Girls. The name was chosen because it is the nearest gate into the historic city. About 6 percent of pupils are boarders in Rotherly, an attractive house on the edge of the school site. Six new buildings on site have provided extra facilities for mathematics, science, technology, music, drama and physical education. Exchange visits are arranged with France, Spain, Germany and United States. Expressive dance is also taught and there is a tradition of an annual dance workshop and performance, which is open to all pupils. Formerly a Beacon school, the Westgate is now in the fourth year of a specialist science project. The school aims to provide a stimulating, balanced curriculum in which pupils of all abilities can find something of interest and something at which to succeed.
