Background:

Opened in temporary buildings on Heatherside site in January 1949; has specialist facilities for every subject area; excellent library with about 10,000 books, a well-equipped learning resources centre, eight science laboratories, two food technology rooms, three CDT workshops, a music suite with four small-group practice rooms, dance and drama studios, a gymnasium and a large sports hall. Extensive audio-visual and ICT facilities. In addition to four computer suites, all teaching rooms are equipped with digital projectors. Specialist science college status. As part of the specialist school programme, the refurbishment of the science laboratories was completed in 2005 and the school's mathematics facilities have also been upgraded to enable more extensive use of ICT facilities.
