Background:
Situated in a rural area on the edge of the New Forest, the main school building dates from 1957. Since then, extensions have included a science block, sports hall, music block and science laboratories. A sixth form was added to the school in September 1995. A 'Quality Assurance' statement promises that parents receive full information and that 'rigorous' monitoring of standards takes place internally and independently. Extra-curricular activities include an inter-house chess tournament, with some players competing at county level. Pupils participate in residential visits to Cornwall, Normandy and Paris, and skiing trips in France and Germany. The school is proud of its involvement in community service and pupils' fundraising for charity. It is over-subscribed, with almost two applications for every place. Around 70% of leavers continue their education after 16.
