Background:

Opened in 1968 and extended in 1978, St Bede's School, is situated on the northern edge of Basingstoke in 'semi-rural surroundings' backing onto farm land. 'Extensive' grounds include 'generous' hard and grassed play areas, playing fields which provide 'excellent' sports and games facilities, in addition to areas which have been landscaped as 'resource wild plots'. The buildings are of traditional design and consist of a central multi-purpose hall used for Masses, assemblies, dinning, PE and drama activities, an infant wing with three class bases, a 'large' practical area and a small library, and the junior wing with four class bases, an SEN classroom, library and resource centre for maths, science, technology, art and craft, as well as an IT suite and a music and drama room. The school persues a 'broad and balanced curriculum and aims to give all pupils the opportunities that are matched to their individual needs'. Extra-curricular activities include a 'flourishing' school choir and individual instrument lessons taught by visiting tutors. The choir and various groups of musicians are brought together 'regularly' to play at school Masses, assemblies and staged productions. The school also offers a 'broad range' of physical activities, such as football, unihoc/hockey, netball, rounders, gymnastics and dance. It has 'close links' with the community, is used as a Mass Centre for the Popley and Chineham districts and is served by the parish church of the Holy Ghost.
