Background:
Crofton School was opened in 1974 as a purpose-built comprehensive school on a spacious, partly wooded site. Crofton's accommodation offers a specialist music block, art, design, food tech, technology block, school hall, weights room, gymnasium, and sports hall. In 1994 an eight laboratory science block was completed, the hall was extended allowing for an extra music recital room and three practice rooms. Over the past two years Information and Communication Technology facilities have undergone extensive improvements and there are four well equipped Information and Communication Technology suites with a fifth mobile suite in planning stage. The school has very good music tuition with a quarter of pupils receiving instrumental lessons. Crofton is an over-subscribed and successful school. The school is a caring school where students of all abilities can thrive, where they participate fully in all aspects of school life. Crofton School is a happy and successful school, rated highly by Ofsted in 2001 and as highly effective in the local authority's most recent categorisation. The school is seeking specialist science and mathematics college status and has been generously support by the Gatsby foundation and by a number of commercial sponsors. The school enjoys the benefit of two advanced skills teachers and three leading teachers. In independent market research, the school was rated very highly by parents (some seven per cent above the industry standards for customer satisfaction). Many parents recognised improvements had been made on an already high set of standards. New parents strongly felt that the school lived upto their expectations (after their child had been in the school for two terms). Crofton is characterised by a spirit of participation well supported by one's peers.
