Background:
Wildern school serves a rapidly expanding population on the outskirts of Southampton. It has modern buildings set in extensive playing fields with a purpose-built sports hall, health and fitness suite, swimming and learner pool and a Performing Arts block including a video editing and recording studio. School facilities include laboratories, 15 computer suites (with both PCs, wireless and Apple suites), 10 CDT rooms and a dance and drama suite. The school also has a recently built wireless technology block housing two ICT suits, science laboratories and 10 English classrooms. Available sports include basketball, netball, hockey and swimming. It also promotes dance, art, drama and music. The school is a designated Leading Edge school. Curriculum development and innovation is strength of the school. The school was part of the DfES pilot for a two year key stage three curriculum and all pupils from September 2006 undertook a two year key stage three curriculum and a three year key stage four curriculum (including AS level for gifted and talented pupils). The school is committed to collaborate with other schools and is the lead school in a Networked Learning Community of 11 partner schools and colleges. The aim and focus of this partnership is to raise attainment through joint projects and through independent learning. The school has a strong culture for learning and academic ethos and has very high expectations with regards to pupils' application to learning and behaviour. The schools' study code, 'Are you willing to learn and ready to work'' is embedded throughout the school. The school has excellent communication and partnership with parents.
