Background:

The school dates from 1972, but was re-organised in 1994. The 'well maintained' and 'spacious' buildings are divided into upper and lower school sections, surrounded by two playgrounds and a playing field. The school'strives to develop pupils' individual talents, supported by the 'great mutual advantage' of close communication between home and school. Personal and social education (PSE) lessons are 'at the heart of the Townhill Junior curriculum'. The school badge reminds pupils of 'three paths to a happy life', involving respect for self and others, and pride in one's work. The proportion of pupils with special educational needs is far higher than the national average, and they can receive extra help if parents seek guidance. The school is proud of its achievements in sport, which include local wins for girls' and boys' football, athletics and rugby teams. Music is encouraged, and over one quarter of pupils participate in the 'excellent' orchestra and choir. In addition to supporting various charities, the school has recently raised the funds to buy a mini-bus for school trips and sports fixtures. It welcomes exchange visitors from Sweden and Japan and maintains links with a college in North America. There are waiting lists of up to 20 students in some years.
