Background:

Founded in 1872; relocated 18 years later to village of Stroud, just over a mile to the west of Petersfield; up to 75 per cent of pupils from wide geographical area outside immediate locality; site occupies extensive grounds overlooking South Downs in area of outstanding natural beauty. School has grown from three-class village school to one-form-entry primary school, complete with hall, music and drama room, IT Suite, heated swimming pool, and changing room complex. Grounds also developed, incorporating copse and quiet area with seating where children sit and play games or sketch during playtimes and lunch hour; story bench in copse where children listen to stories from teachers or visitors. Emphasis on children acquiring basic skills of numeracy and literacy, while enjoying broad curriculum with emphasis on sport and creative arts. All National Curriculum subjects taught; extra-curricular activities include art, dance, drama, music, sport, French and IT. The school orchestra is well-established; all children learn to play tuned instrument. Musically-able children have won Hampshire Scholarships for Exceptional Ability in Music; opportunities to perform in school and in local festivals. Many children take Associated Board examinations in Music. Year 6 pupils were winners of Hampshire Chronicle Newspaper of the Year competition (2003). Charity fundraising organised by Year 6 pupils; Key Stage 2 pupils decide annually on charity to be sponsored. Many and varied sporting opportunities. All pupils taught rudiments of skiing on local dry ski slope; regular inter-school sports. FA Charter Mark awarded in January 2004; Healthy Schools award. Charter Mark (2004); Artsmark Gold (2006); DfES achievement award (2001, 2002, 2003); Activemark Gold (2004). Ethos: 'An inclusive family ethos where the contributions of all pupils are valued.
