Background:

The school bears the name of the former Bishop of Winchester, three times chancellor and buried in Winchester Cathedral. Opened in 1972 as the city's first purpose-built co-educational comprehensive, the school is sited on the northern outskirts and draws pupils from the suburbs of Weeke, Harestock, Teg Down, Kings Worthy as well as the villages of Littleton, Wonston, South Wonston, Sutton Scotney, Itchen Abbas, Easton and Micheldever. Its central administration block is surrounded by separate buildings with specialist teaching accommodation, a sports hall and health education suite. More than eight in 10 (85%) pupils continue their education after the age of 16. It is over-subscribed, with 1.2 applications per place, and features a compressed school day from 8.45am to 2.25pm. The school is 'well-known' for excellence in the expressive arts such as art, drama, music and dance, and runs a specialist course for talented musicians. Sporting achievements include county under-15 rugby champions, district under-16 hockey champions; district and county representatives in soccer (boys and girls), netball, cross-country, athletics, tennis and gymnastics club. There are language exchanges to France and Germany and the normal timetable is suspended for one week in summer term, when the whole school takes part in residential trips at home or abroad.
