Background:

Crondall Primary School was founded in 1877. It is a Victorian building that has been 'extremely sympathetically and inspirationally' adapted and extended to accommodate seven classes. A spare room has now been converted into a networked ICT suite for whole class computer lessons. The school is situated in the heart of the conservation area village of Crondall and is very much a 'community' school, maintaining 'excellent links' with the village. An example of such links is the annual art exhibition which features and sells the work of semi-professional local artists. A percentage of the profits go to the school, and in 1998 over #7,500 worth of paintings were sold, which is 'average'. The school has an 'excellent ethos' and supports many local charities as well as an orphanage in Romania. Children are 'encouraged to be independent' and termly charity fund raising is 'completely initiated by the pupils'. After-school clubs, run by professional sports coaches, are held for juniors, while the school choir has achieved considerable success in the authority. The use of the local and more distant environments is 'integral to the teaching process'. Year 5 pupils participate in a three day environmental residential field study trip and Year 6 spend five days in Dieppe, France. This trip is cross-curricular: history, geography and practising French, which is taught in Year 6. The popularity of the school means that 'many year groups are over-subscribed and appeals are held regularly'.
