Background:
Built in 1939 in the centre of a market town with a catchment area extending to villages in west, the school's buildings have been enlarged over the years. It maintains close links with Alton College for tertiary education and more than eight in 10 pupils continue their education at the age of 16. The school is fully-subscribed. It organises special programmes for particularly able students and has a reputation for music and art. Regular visits at home and abroad are arranged, including established French and German exchanges. The school was the regional winner in the National Science Week Festival of Chemistry in 1994, had recent successes in the Hansard Society and National Youth Parliament competitions, and was runner-up in the British Gas Powersaver competition in 1998. 'The school enjoys a relaxed but purposeful atmosphere. Our children are generally well-behaved and happy. Staff are highly-professional and caring'.
