Background:
Merdon Junior school is situated in 'an attractive residential area' of Chandler's Ford. The traditional catchment area consists of a relatively affluent area but pupils are increasingly drawn from farther afield. The school was opened in 1956 and has been extended to include 12 classrooms, an information centre, a library, a range of communication technology facilities and an arts pavilion. The arts pavilion is used for music, drama and extra-curricular activities. The school is situated on a large site with its own copse and pond, which are used for conservation and environmental studies. There are also fields with a football pitch and two hard playgrounds. The school draws on parents and the local community as a source of curricular enrichment. The school has its own orchestra of over 60 children, which meets after school. The school's aim to promote the independence of pupils' learning and to provide the opportunity for children to develop to their full potential is reflected in its mission statement: 'Achieving the best for all'.
