Background:

Opened in 1971, Halterworth Primary is situated in a 'pleasant' site with 'extensive' grounds on the outskirts of the market town of Romsey. A conservation area has been created with a large pond, while staff and children are developing a site with woodland walks, wildflower gardens and an outside classroom, with the help of British Trust conservation volunteers. Four of the lower school classes are housed in an open plan extension and two purpose-built 'light and spacious' classrooms accommodate Year 2. An outside play area for reception children has a castle, sandpit, wendy house and flower bed. The upper and lower schools each have a library. Specialist audio-visual, science, mathematics, history, technology and geography equipment is kept in a resources room with the school museum. The Romsey Special Educational Needs Resource Collection is housed in a newly-built special needs room. Clubs for netball, football, rounders and cricket are offered after school with football, cricket and squash coaching provided by outside bodies, and school teams compete against local schools. The netball team won the Romsey and District Primary School Sports Association knock out competition. Halterworth won the Classic FM School Choir of the Year Competition. The school is 'very popular' .
