Background:
Shirley Junior school is located in a suburb of Southampton and draws on a diverse selection of backgrounds. The school was built in 1912 and houses a separate infant school on the ground floor. The junior school occupies the first and second floors and consists of 16 classrooms, a library, a music and drama room and a small hall. Outside there is a conservation area with a pond, which is used as an important resource for learning. In spite of its relatively small site, the school has seen considerable success including becoming Hampshire Kwik Cricket champions in 1999 and Tag Rugby Champions in 1998. The school'sees its links with the community and charitable organisations as vital to the development of the children's understanding of social and moral issues. The school aims to provide each child with the total education that meets his or her needs on an individual basis.
